Waimea Canyon? Ain’t that the Grand Canyon? No, it is…
It looks like a small Grand Canyon. Many people call it the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”. This saying is regarded to be from Mark Twain, who was in Hawaii from April 16 to November 16, 1866 in behalf of the Sacramento Daily Union. Die Sacramento Daily Union published his famous 25 “Mark Twain’s Letters From Hawaii”. But Mark Twain never was on the island Kaua’i, where Waimea Canyon is located. But Mark Twain did a great job for Hawai’i by writing his letters. Every now and then someone uses them to write about Hawai’i like New York Times did it (“Mark Twain’s Hawaii”).
Waimea Canyon is not as big as Grand Canyon. But it’s true: It is the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”. Three times I’ve been there so far (two times together with Manuela) and everytime I was fascinated by this natural wonder. And there are a lot more of natural wonders very close to the Waimea Canyon (i.e. Kalalau Valley). And there’s a beautiful scenic view towards the ocean.
Everybody wants to come back - like we do.
