About data connection
Our B&B accomodation Lokelani Garden is located near Kapa’a about 3 or 4 miles away from the coast. My iPhone is switching from AT&T to T-Mobile and back and …. to get a sufficient connection. But even when connected the data connection is very poor and not very reliable.
On the one hand this lets me almost forget about roaming prices and about checking emails and messages in...

Eagle has landed
Finally we arrived in Honolulu, HI. We are in our room in “Ohana Honolulu Airport Hotel” and we are tired but happy.
Best of all the hotel has free internet access via ethernet in all rooms. It’s not very fast but it works. I called for the hotel shuttle in the airport baggage claim and the shuttle only needed some minutes to pick us up. The folks of Ohana Hotel are very...

Evernote for ever and everywhere on my iPhone
I upgraded to Evernote Premium and put a lot of tips for Hawaii in Evernote to have them offline whenever and where ever I want to read them. I even created a public notebook for hawaiitwentyten :-)

Delicious evening at Margaretenhof
Yesterday evening @manuela and I went to Margaretenhof, a winery only some 300 yds. away from our home. They have a restaurant with a lovely terrace. There only were 6 more people so the restaurant was quite empty at the time.
We enjoyed their Saint Laurent red wine
and roasted Barbarie duck breast glazed with spicy apple jelly and cheese dumplings.
Manuela liked the Crème brûlée with...

Stuff for Hawaii: Zi8, SDR-S150, SX10 IS
This stuff I’ll be using in Hawaii to take pictures and videos:
Kodak Zi8 Wonderful. Everytime, everywhere.
Panasonic SDR-S150 A little bit old, no HD. But good lens and zoom.
Canon Powershot SX10 IS Very good for quick shots as well as for impressive pictures, very good zoom.
…and of course my iPhone that I used to take this picture :-)

@AMauiBlog @PeterLiu47 Maybe we could have...
Next week we (@manuela and @fwhamm) will start our trip to paradise and visit the four major islands of Hawaii. We will arrive on Maui May 7 in the morning and we will leave Maui May 13 in the morning. We would be very pleased to meet some people I (Frank) already met on Twitter or even some more people :-)
Would it be possible to have a #mauitweetup then?

Hawaii: iPhone apps for travellers
Next week our trip to paradise will begin. Almost all our preparations have been finished. I will take my iPhone with me to Hawaii although roaming prices are terrible. But half of the time we will have free Internet access in our bed & breakfast accomodations and I know there will be some wifi hotspots like on Oahu.

Merrie Monarch Festival Overall Winner: Ke Kai O...
This weekend was a pleasure for me watching the live stream of the Merrie Monarch Festival from Hilo, HI on KFVE. I had the advantage of the 12 hour time shift between Hilo (PST) and Schwabenheim (CEST) so I watched the Hula festival in the morning while having breakfast. The overall winner is Ke Kai O Kahiki:
Six-man Waianae halau Ke Kai O Kahiki won every award they competed for in the Merrie...

Merrie Monarch Festival Live Streaming
It’s so amazing being here right now in Germany and watching KFVE Home Team’s Merrie Monarch live stream.
That’s a huge advantage because here in Germany it’s 9:30 am while in Hawaii it’s 12 hours earlier. Several Twitterati from Hawaii or mainland have expressed their wishes for some more coffee to stay awake :-) In Mexico it’s in the middle of the night so...

The first European Blogger in Hawaii
A blogger typically is someone writing a blog. But a blog just is a means to an end. So why not writing with a pencil on a sheet of paper and lateron publishing all these sentences and paintings in a book? So did Heinrich Zimmermann:
Zimmermann was a humble craftsman who joined Captain Cook’s third journey as a sailor and he was the first to publish a travel report about that unfortunate...

The Power of Social Media
It’s an amazing world. The power of social media has changed the world within a few years. Nowadays time and distance are quite meaningless when you prepare your vacation and when you are on vacation. People in social media even may be closer than they appear.
The first time I was in Hawaii on Easter weekend 27 years ago in 1983 for a short trip. I was based in El Paso, TX and two other...
